One of Hong Kong’s most arresting and tranquil escapes, Chi Lin Nunnery was founded in 1934 and completely rebuilt in Tang Dynasty style in 1994. Channelling ancient Chinese construction methods, the impressive all-wood structure features a matrix of interlocking beams and not a single nail, making it one of the world’s largest handmade wooden buildings. Amid lotus ponds, bonsai trees and chanting, the buildings are arranged in an axisymmetric layout, epitomising the beauty of symmetry and harmony in traditional Chinese Architecture. Cross a footbridge and visit the adjacent Nan Lian Garden for an idyllic walk between the calm waters and rocks to the distinctive red Zi Wu Bridge and Golden Pavilion of Absolute Perfection. End the day with a delectable Chinese vegetarian meal at the nearby restaurant, with its exceptional waterfall view.
