Attention was dutifully paid to Hong Kong history in the planning and construction of the SAR’s outlying branch of the University of Chicago. Positioned on a cliff on Hong Kong Island’s west coast and developed in conjunction with the Jockey Club Heritage Preservation Project, the striking, sinuous campus absorbed the dilapidated buildings of the colonial-era detention centre known as the White House, repurposing them as classrooms, study rooms and student common rooms. Some ceiling and wall cell marks have been preserved. Remarkable exterior features include the World War II Jubilee Battery coastal gun emplacement and ancillary structures; and tours and exhibitions relate the history of the site. Heritage trails crossing the complex connect with the Mount Davis hiking trail, meaning guaranteed access to the campus’ open areas for all visitors.
