Consisting of a sanctuary building for a 500-person congregation and a five-storey podium incorporating a chapel, kindergarten, fellowship hall and bridal suites, this is a recently completed revamp at one of the oldest religious institutions in Hong Kong. Taking inspiration from the original church, founded in 1844 by Reverend James Legge, local firm KplusK associates designed a ‘New Gothic’ Architecture, whose verticality is emphasised by five pairs of vaulting columns. The columns support lightweight, perforated walls suspended off the ground, creating a light-filled sanctuary space surrounded by a sub-tropical remembrance garden. Elevated by tessellated acoustic panels and light oak seating, the result is a spiritually uplifting building of worship.
